Issa Honor: Uncle Luke to receive the IAMHipHop award at the BET Hip-Hop Awards

YAYYY, YOU!

After 35 years of having his cultural contributions diminished, scrutinized, and challenged in a court of law, Miami bred hitmaker, Uncle Luke, is finally receiving the props he deserves.

During the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards, the 56-year-old unsung founder of Florida-birthed “booty music” will be honored as this year’s IAMHipHop award recipient.

Boasting a career-long lists of firsts, Luke—a.k.a. Godfather of Southern Hip Hop—will be acknowledged for being the first Southern rapper to appear on Billboard’s Pop charts, the first Southern rapper to start an independent rap record label, Luke Records, and the first artist in history to provide “parental advisory” stickers on product to responsibly ensure his unique talents were strictly enjoyed by heads of a certain age—a move, soon thereafter, made mandatory for any/all elicit material in the music industry.

As an immortalized figure in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame for his work as a member of the 2 Live Crew, Luke also paved the way for lyricists to freely spit their souls via his victorious fight against the Supreme Court to ensure freedom of speech, in the mid 90s.

In addition to his personal achievements, Uncle Luke has been warmly credited for molding the illustrious careers of Hip-Hop greats such as Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, and DJ Khaled—who’ll reprise his role as host for the Hip-Hop Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Immediately following the filming of BET’s annual celebration of the genre and its influencers, Luke hopped on Instagram thanking the network for recognizing his Hip-Hop pioneering legacy.

“Here it is Ladies and Gentlemen my iamhiphop Lifetime Achievement Award from the Entertainment Industry that I love so much but have always been snubbed,” he wrote beneath an image of his trophy. “I’ve been waiting 35 years for this I want to thank new boss at #bet Connie Orlando Jesse Collins Debra Lee for this Honor.”

Coupled with receiving his lifetime achievement award, Uncle Luke is also producing a biopic on his life with Lions Gate and working on several other television projects.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards will air Tuesday, October 10 at 8:00 PM on BET.
