Petition calls for Prince statue to replace Christopher Columbus statue in Minnesota

A bust of music’s heralded Purple One may soon replace a statue of history’s Niña, Pinta, Santa Maria sailing son, Christopher Columbus.

As a politically divided America continues its efforts to eliminate longstanding images memorializing the nation’s race-torn history, a newly circulated petition is now calling for the erection of a monument honoring the late “Kiss” crooner to stand in place of a Columbus sculpture in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“We, the undersigned, do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry,” the online call-to-action, fired off by local organizer, Wintana Melekin, reads. “Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish black and Native peoples, we should honor members of our community whose leadership we find inspiration.”

The petition, addressed directly to Minnesota governor Mark Dayton and the state legislature, adds, “Prince represents Minnesota values and Columbus does not.”

To date, the digital movement to replace Christopher Columbus’ statue with a piece decided to Prince–a native of Minnesota– has received 4,066 out of 5,000 signatures…

Similarly, a petition to replace a Confederate monument in Portsmouth, Virginia with a figure celebrating Hip-Hop legend and area native, Missy Elliott, has received a number of John Handcocks in its favor, as well.
